FAQs

Why Sailing?

  • To help improve human health (greater aerobic fitness, cardiovascular fitness, anaerobic capacity and muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and agility).
  • To help improve team skills and survival skills in the community and be fun relaxation with friends, with a natural high.
  • To balance the elements to go where you want to go, developing mental and physical skills.
  • To complement existing watersports in Vietnam in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • To attract all ages without gender or social background restrictions.
  • To empower youth with life skills of team building, confidence and coordination, particularly in Vietnam with a relatively young population.
  • To help promote Vietnam’s 3,444km of stunning coastline, especially working with the Sports Universities.

Sailing is good because Vietnam has such a long coastline; when students go back to their province they can teach it and develop it there. – Dr Lam Quang Thanh (Saigon Times, 14.4.2011).

  • To help bring countries together with a similar passion and understanding.
  • To help improve environmental health
    • Sailing and watersports can be organized to define and survey Marine Protected Areas where marine life can grow and multiply to help service growing demands of the human population. Vietnam defined 17 MPAs in 1998 with ADB funding which have yet to be ratified. Watersports can be used to help the implementation.
    • Sailing can raise awareness for marine conservation and provide alternative or additional livelihoods for fishermen, using their existing ocean skills to help service Vietnam’s growing industries of watersports and tourism, to help take fishermen above the poverty line and off endangered habitats to build marine stocks.
    • Watersports can raise awareness on the need to reduce rubbish and pollution (with the help of fishing family kids) to help protect the quality of natural resources underpinning the sport (e.g., surfers against sewage)
  • To balance the elements to go where you want to go, using wind and water power without the need for engine power.
  • To help Vietnam adapt to climate change with sea levels rising and a vulnerable coastline.
  • To help address three of five Millennium Development Goals
    • Sailing can be structured to help break the cycle of poverty/development trap (Mayer, 1997).
    • Sail training can be broad based and a universal education while inspiring national team development for Olympics or Paralympics.
    • Sailing does not require a gender bias.
    • Sailing can be a healthy means of transport, recreation and education for young children.
    • Sailing can support environmental sustainability.

Insurance Liability Waiver

MANTA is committed to conducting its programs and activities in the safest manner possible and holds the well-being of participants in the highest possible regard.
