Beyond Sport featured MANTA Sail Training Centre in our 2020 workshops.
Previous Beyond Sport Climate Action Award Winners, MANTA Sailing, have been running a series of innovative and interactive workshops aimed at making the coastlines safer and cleaner. For many years, MANTA have been strong advocates for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a strong focus on reduced inequalities, education & employability, and climate action.
MANTA joined the Sport and STEM Alliance last year and have been using virtual platforms and videography to spread their message. One of their recent videos is a call to action, encouraging innovative and cost-effective solutions to disposing of plastic waste that litters their coastline.
In recent years, rising sea levels around Vietnam’s 4,000km+ coastline has resulted in an increased risk to children in terms of death by drowning. On average, 6,000 children per year lose their lives by drowning, a figure which MANTA are determined to reduce. Through their online swimming survival tutorials, they are able to reach vulnerable children, whilst also teaching them about the importance of climate change.
Many of the children involved in their virtual workshops are local fisher-folk children, looking to gain employability skills to help set them up for the future. MANTA provide opportunities for the children to enhance their tech skills to come up with innovative ways to tackle the climate emergency.
