Sail Training: for beginners to pros with ISAF levels 1-6

Sailing is the oldest sail sport in the world – The oldest sailors are the Pacific Islanders! Sailing is a sport for everyone, from the age of 6 to 80. This is one of the most traditional sports, in which a boat is propelled by wind power rather than a motor. A sailboat requires only a little wind, which makes it an enjoyable sport every day. There are two types of sailing boats: monohulls and multihulls. There are two sizes of sailing boats: dinghies and larger sailing boats. At MANTA, we sail monohull dinghies!

MANTA provides lessons for beginners to pros with ISAF levels 1-6. ISAF is the acronym for  International Sailing Federation, the governing body of the sport of sailing. ISAF changed its name to World Sailing in 2015. World Sailing is recognised by both The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the governing body of the sport of sailing.

To outline the internationally recognized legal framework for sailing in simple terms. Levels 1 to 6 take students progressively through the skills required to help master the sport of sailing. Level 1 helps students gather the skills to learn safely alone. Level 2 helps students develop intermediate skills. Level 3 helps students learn the skills of racing. Level 4 helps students develop undergraduate skills for the sport. Level 5 helps students develop postgraduate skills to help develop the sport of sailing. These levels are relevant to athletes who can then progress with elite sports levels or with coach levels, or both.

Levels 4 and 5 are expected to be equivalent to undergraduate and postgraduate levels respectively, and MANTA looks forward to helping World Sailing develop their training with Vietnam’s three sports universities.

What will they learn about sailing?

Participants will need to learn about the basics of sailing, such as knots, rigging, sail trim, maneuvering the boat, and navigating, as well as safety information and how to properly use safety equipment. With the right knowledge and practice, participants will be able to sail confidently and enjoy the beauty of the sea!

At MANTA, the best way to develop the skills of sailing is practical practice, in small sequential steps copying the coach. MANTA’s coaches are always in the same boat as the student, until the students can demonstrate they have gathered the basic skills of sailing to sail safely alone. That way, the student learns the fastest ways to transfer their practical skills to muscle memory (without having to unlearn any synaptic routes picked up in error). Practice/time on the water is then the best way to develop watersports skills.

MANTA always operates its sailing courses and protocols at the highest internationally accepted levels for the sport, relevant to Vietnam. MANTA has adapted the training program for Vietnam to deliver the practical training with greater safety and speed, in simpler English, as English is rarely the first language of MANTA clients. Furthermore, MANTA has modified the course for warm weather sailing as the sailing courses are usually drawn with a bias to colder climate sailing.

MANTA’s trainers are watersports trained fisherfolk, who are now Vietnam’s top sailing athletes, coaches, and managers, with 12 years of practical experience. They have been trained to deliver the best and fastest way to learn to sail. Their training is the absolute minimum of one year of coach training and practical seasonal experience, following Vietnam’s national program. Students can come and try SUP lessons to determine the appropriate balance with MANTA’s trainers before enrolling in sail training lessons.

Sailing is an incredibly rewarding experience! It helps participants get to enjoy the freshness of Vietnam’s beaches, get to learn a new skill and challenge themselves in a unique way. It’s an activity that can bring friends and family together, and it’s a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. All in all, sailing is a wonderful activity that can bring a lot of joy and satisfaction.
